Functional medicine EHR and EMR

A functional medicine EHR is the software a practice uses to record the visit, place orders, and bill for the care. Practices often call that same system a functional medicine EMR. As of October 13, 2026, 42 U.S.C. 17921 defines an electronic health record as an electronic record of health-related information on an individual that is created, gathered, managed, and consulted by authorized health care clinicians and staff.

Vye Core is an EHR and practice platform: scheduling, charting, telehealth, a patient app and billing in one place, with Vye Orders included.

What is a functional medicine EHR?

It is the system of record for a functional medicine practice, whatever name is on the box. EHR and EMR show up in the same searches because clinics use both words for the chart. The federal definition above is about the record itself: clinicians and staff create it, gather it, manage it, and consult it. It does not name a brand, a specialty, or a price.

Read the product against the work you already decided to offer. The guide to starting a functional medicine practice asks you to write a service map first: who you see, what the first visit covers, which tests you order, and how the patient pays. The EHR has to run that map. A long feature list does not help if the visit, the orders, and the bill live in three logins.

What should a functional medicine EMR hold?

A functional medicine EMR has to hold the decisions on your service map. Write down the history, the tests, the medications and supplements, the follow-up, and the fee before you judge the software. The starting guide treats each of those as a planning prompt. The table below turns them into questions for a demo, not a required panel or a treatment protocol. If the chart cannot record a decision, the practice cannot run the map you wrote.

Part of the work Question to ask Where it comes from
History and outside records Can the chart hold a long first visit and the records that arrived before it? The service map starts with history and records.
Testing Can you see why a test was ordered and who reviews the result? Testing is its own decision on the map.
Medications and supplements Can you list what the patient already takes, next to anything you recommend? Supplement review belongs in the medication history.
Follow-up Can the patient get the result and the next visit without a second system? Follow-up is part of the visit, not an afterthought.
Payment Can a visit fee or a membership sit next to the chart? The cash-pay guide separates the fee from outside bills.

If a row on your map has no place in the software, that gap shows up on the first real patient, not in the sales demo.

How do labs and supplements get into the chart?

Ask whether an order starts in the chart and comes back to the same chart. The service map treats testing, medications and supplements, and referrals as separate decisions. The software should let you tell those apart, and it should show the patient which of them are billed by someone else.

Order labs, prescriptions, referrals and supplements from the chart, with Vye Orders. Vye Orders lets you order labs, imaging, sleep studies and other specialist referrals, prescriptions including compounded medications, and supplements from one place, and your patients use one login.

What does Vye Core include?

Vye Core is an EHR and practice platform: scheduling, charting, telehealth, a patient app and billing in one place, with Vye Orders included. Charting, labs, and telehealth in one place, plus an AI scribe. The AI scribe drafts the visit note. You review, edit and sign it.

Scheduling, charting, billing and patient messages live in one system, so nothing gets typed in twice. Video visits run in the browser, with nothing for patients to install. Your patients get one place to book, message your team, fill in forms and pay.

Vye supports these practice types today: women's health, metabolic health, longevity, root-cause or functional medicine, hormone optimization, peptide therapy, medical weight loss, sports and performance medicine, family medicine, traditional primary care, and concierge medicine.

The Vye Core page walks through scheduling, charting, and the patient app. The Vye Orders page covers labs, prescriptions, referrals, and supplements.

Can you keep your current EHR?

You do not have to move every existing chart on day one. You can start with Vye Core for new patients and keep your current system for existing patients. Not ready to switch EHRs? Start with Vye Orders. Import your patient list, then see patients on Vye Core. On a demo, we look at how your practice runs today and what you'd move. Bring the service map to that conversation and mark which patients are the new lane.

What does it cost to start?

Vye charges $0 upfront, and no SaaS or monthly fee. That line is about joining Vye. It is not a price for outside labs, supplements, or a collaborating physician. The entity, the identifiers, and the insurance still have to be set up, and those steps are in the private-practice launch guide.
