Practice management software, explained
By Vye Health editorial team
Published . Updated .
Practice management software is the part of a clinic's system that schedules visits, reminds patients, takes payment, and keeps the operational work moving. The chart itself is the electronic health record. As of October 13, 2026, 42 U.S.C. 17921 defines that record as health-related information on an individual that authorized clinicians and staff create, gather, manage, and consult. A practice can buy those as two products. The problem shows up when the front desk and the clinician do not share one list of patients.
Vye Core is an EHR and practice platform: scheduling, charting, telehealth, a patient app and billing in one place, with Vye Orders included.
What does practice management software do?
Think of four jobs, and ask which product owns each one:
| Job | What "done" looks like |
|---|---|
| Schedule | A patient can book, and the day sheet matches the chart. |
| Remind | The patient gets an email before the visit. |
| Pay | The fee is collected in the same place as the booking. |
| Follow through | Messages, forms, and the claim or the membership sit on that same patient. |
The AMA's selection guide is a second opinion on how to choose. It is not a ranking, and this page does not name a winner. Scheduling, charting, billing and patient messages live in one system, so nothing gets typed in twice. Patients book online and get an email reminder before each visit.
How is this different from an EHR?
The EHR is the clinical record. Practice management software is the operations around it. Clinics search both phrases because a small practice feels the split as two logins. If you chart in one system and bill in another, someone retypes the visit. That retyping is the problem to remove, not a feature to shop for.
Charting, labs, and telehealth in one place, plus an AI scribe. The AI scribe drafts the visit note. You review, edit and sign it. Vye runs bookings, billing, coding, denials, and compliance.
For a membership practice, use the direct primary care EHR page. For a functional medicine chart, use the functional medicine EHR page.
What does it cost to start?
Vye charges $0 upfront, and no SaaS or monthly fee. The startup cost guide is where the rest of the opening budget is planned. Software is one line in that budget, not the whole launch.
