How to start a medical practice
By Vye Health editorial team

To start a medical practice, confirm you can practice under your license, choose how patients will pay, and finish credentialing before you see insured patients. The search "how to start a private practice" often returns therapy and counseling pages. This page is for a medical practice. The shared business sequence, including the entity and the first-visit rehearsal, is in the private-practice launch guide. This is general planning information, not legal advice.
VyeOS is for MD, DO and NP clinicians who want a practice of their own.
How do you start a medical practice?
Work in this order. Skipping ahead is how people book a patient they are not yet allowed to see.
- Confirm the license you hold, and the state where you will see patients. VyeOS is for MD, DO and NP clinicians who want a practice of their own.
- Choose the practice type. Vye supports these practice types today: women's health, metabolic health, longevity, root-cause or functional medicine, hormone optimization, peptide therapy, medical weight loss, sports and performance medicine, family medicine, traditional primary care, and concierge medicine.
- Choose how you will be paid: insurance, cash pay, a membership, or a mix. The cash-pay guide covers the direct-pay choice. A direct primary care membership has its own start guide.
- Get the identifiers the startup cost guide and the private-practice guide already walk through. CMS publishes the National Provider Identifier standard.
- If you will bill insurance, credential. The credentialing page is that step. Credentialing usually takes a few weeks. You can set up your practice and website while it's in progress.
- Set up the chart. Vye Core is an EHR and practice platform: scheduling, charting, telehealth, a patient app and billing in one place, with Vye Orders included.
To launch on VyeOS, you sign up, verify your identity and license, and complete credentialing. You see patients once credentialing clears.
The AMA's getting-started page is a second checklist from a medical association. Use it beside this one. Where the two disagree about Vye, this page follows Vye's approved claims only.
What does Vye run for you?
Vye manages licensing, credentialing, malpractice insurance, and your website, and payer contracts if you want them. Vye runs bookings, billing, coding, denials, and compliance. Vye bills insurance for your practice. Vye runs patient acquisition for your practice: the practice website, SEO, directory listings, and Google and Meta ads on a budget you set.
Vye can't promise how many patients you'll see. We help you grow your practice. You can launch your practice while you're still employed.
What should you not assume?
Do not assume a therapy article about "starting a private practice" covers a medical license, a DEA registration, or payer credentialing. Do not assume a timeline from a headline. Credentialing usually takes a few weeks. That is not a promise about a named payer, and it is not a date for your first insured visit.
The opening budget, separate from Vye's fee, is in the startup cost guide.
What does it cost to start with Vye?
Vye charges $0 upfront, and no SaaS or monthly fee. That does not set your rent, your malpractice premium, or the fee you charge patients.
